D.O.: Grown Up
by D.O.
Two things have happened in the past week that prove I’m actually taking steps towards “arriving” in adulthood.
Wednesday, at the age of 26, I bought my first suit. It received some pretty positive feedback, and I felt altogether good about the situation.
Then, on Saturday, I was fortunate to be a part of a photo shoot at Cornerstone Baptist Church in downtown Dallas in which 16 local photographers got together and shot individual and family portraits of people affiliated with the church. For many, it was the first time they’d ever had their picture made. It was a wonderful time for everyone involved (photos to come soonly, I hope).
Eight hours and several hundred people later, all the photographers were packing up and passing out their cards, an activity in which I couldn’t participate for lack of having a card to offer… which brings me to my second step towards “arriving”: designing business cards. Below are some prospects.
And there you have it. Thoughts?

Definitely number two, DO. It’s simple, understated…and adult.
I vote numero dos – simple and to the point. Great design skills by the way.
Not three or five.
#2.
I like the first and the last one.
either 1 or 4
My husband already beat me here! Let’s see if I agree with him.
And, because I analyze things way too much – I’m also adding suggestions – hope you wanted those – if not – just ignore!
I like #1 the best – but I’d make the DO in the upper left corner a little bigger – although I do like that it matches the watermark/background.
I don’t think #2 fits your photography or your personality – it’s too normal and too bland – but it is simple & straight forward.
I like the camera on the last two – I’d just stick it by itself on the back of #1 – can you do two-sided?
And that’s my two cents.
Business-Card-IIb-small.jpg wins for me. I think I would change “is a photographer” to just photography. Alas, I often find that I am boring. This card was the most graphic and visually appealing. Your contact info was in good proportion to the name and image. Since I can’t see it on an actual card, I would suggest white space above your name. You have a great eye.
I like 4, and I love the use of Bebas.
The concept of the last two is stinkin’ hilarious. The subtle humor kills me — you’re not advertising yourself, you just want people to know you’re a photographer, that’s all.
That said, #2 is, I think, the most professional. Although I might put all your info on the back of the card instead of cramming it onto the front.
Of course, you could get a few pages of each printed, and then look for people’s reactions when you hand them out — then make a decision based on that instead of printing off 100 of just one option.
I vote for one of the “Derrick Oliver is a Photographer” ones. It’s certainly attention grabbing, and people will remember your name because of it. If people don’t remember you, they won’t hire you.
I love them all! You are so funny! # 3 really made me laugh! Great job!
I’m going with number 4. I like the font better and it’s more creative… Plus is is subtly hilarious.
The last two are my faves. Albeit your negative space does need some work. And keep your typefaces consistent with the feeling you ate trying to convey, which I assume, is wit. Good ideas.
First, you are loving the amount of feedback on this post. Second, number three is bad. Third, I like number 2.
#3 minus the Twitter and Awesome lines…definitly minus the awesome line. It will give you a little more space. Don’t listen to Jon.
I’d get rid of the headings too.
